So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

      BURIAL Mountain View Cemetery,

Josephine Donna Smith was born 10 March 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois--just a few months previous to her father's death (Don Carlos Smith died 7 August 1941). She had two older sisters, Agnes Charlotte (born 7 August 1836) and
Sophronia (born 22 April 1838) Sophronia died on 3 October 1843 when Josephine was only two years old.

On 28 January 1846, Josephine's parents were sealed for time and all eternity in the Nauvoo Temple, with George A. Smith standing proxy for his cousin, Don Carlos. Agnes remained in Nauvoo with most o the rest of the Smiths ater the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum and the exodus of the saints west. She later married a lawyer named William Pickett, and they had twin boys, named William Jr. and Don Carlos Pickett after Agnes's two husbands.

In 1851, Pickett moved his family briefly to Utah and then on to California, where Agnes and her children spent the remainder of their lives. She and her daughters kept their ties to Mormonism secret, but Josephine maintained some contact with Church leaders, especially with Joseph F. Smith.

She evidenced many of the same literary talents as her father, as she later adopted the pen name of "Ina Coolbrith." She became California's first poet laureate in 1915. She was quite well known in the upper social circles in San Francisco and entertained such literary greats as Jack London, George Sterling, John Muir, and Mark Twain. She received literary honors, including serving as president of the Congress of Authors and president of the Women's Press Association. The United States Geographic Board named a Sierra peak in Summit County "Mount Ina Coolbrith" after her.
